Chris and I have sought to operate The Fig Tree in a way that provides our guests with a “KI Experience”, and satisfies their expectations, while still having time to enjoy our own personal pursuits. A real plus is the separate owners residence, it allows us and our guests privacy, but with the advantage of being available to interact with them as they wish. Operating The Fig Tree is not as difficult as we imagined it would be, each unit takes a little over an hour to service, after our guests have vacated, even less if it is a multi night stay. Laundry is collected and returned by an outside service. We supply a light breakfast that guests prepare in their room. Administration is simple and we use a basic accounting computer program to keep track of our paperwork, bookings are monitored from our association with Sealink and other booking agents (Our updating link through Roamfree to WOTIF, QUICKBEDS. etc. has proved very successful) through our Wireless broadband connection. We considered our first task when we arrived was to make The Fig Tree a place where guests could relax after their day exploring the Island. To this end we have developed an easy care water wise bush garden, with the accent on native trees and shrubs. Chris is often complimented on her results, especially by overseas visitors. Owning a B&B is not for everyone, but anyone who chooses this lifestyle can find their own level of satisfaction through the operation of such an flexible business. For example, we know that providing meals is one way to add value to each bed-night as well as attracting additional bookings. Also providing personal tours and Ferry / Airport pick-ups would attract those visitors seeking a fully escorted visit. The Fig Tree is in a unique position and configuration that it offers a prospective purchaser the opportunity to take this family business in whatever direction they choose, from a semi retired lifestyle with a supplementary income, to a fully integrated tourism operation with an income to match. .
